2011 Director’s Community Leadership Awards

The Mobile Division is pleased to honor Mr. Bruce L. Brown for his commitment to supporting Mobile’s youth. Mr. Brown is a member and mentor instructor for 100 Black Men of Greater Mobile, Inc. The non-profit organization is comprised of resourceful, prominent African-American men who are leaders of their communities. The men are committed to the formation and implementation of programs that enhance mentoring, education, health and wellness, and economic development. Mr. Brown not only mentors troubled students placed at alternate schools, but also mentors high-achieving students in the Mobile County School System.

Mr. Brown served in the United States Navy from 1981 to 2003, was presented with the United States Navy Sailor of the Year Award in 1996, and received a heroic achievement medal.

In 2000, Mr. Brown began to volunteer as a mentor and basketball coach. He used the opportunity to teach children the value and need for community involvement and sought to instill in them a sense of responsibility. Relying on his training as a Navy drug and alcohol counselor, he discussed peer pressure, self-identity, education, setting goals, and the dangers of alcohol and drug use.

Mr. Brown is a member of Goodwill Church Ministries, where he established a men’s mentoring group. Mr. Brown is also a member of Goodwill Church Outreach Ministry, a program that involves visiting different communities twice a week to talk with troubled youth.
