September is National Preparedness Month, and this year’s theme is “Plan Now. Work Together. Be Ready.” Whether you’re an active emergency responder, a good neighbor or a parent taking care of a family, everyone plays a role during an emergency. Because, it’s not a matter of IF an emergency will occur, but rather a matter of WHEN.
The Ready Coast Guard preparedness program is a stark reminder that while Coast Guard men and women are best known as lifesavers during an emergency, we have to take steps to protect our families and property in the communities where we live and work.
The program urges members to take three simple steps: get an emergency supply kit, make a family emergency plan, and stay informed about the types of emergencies that could take place in your community. As the site says, “Preparing for emergencies doesn’t take a lot of time or effort, but it brings peace of mind.”
While the Ready Coast Guard program is targeted towards informing Coast Guard families, it is part of a coordinated federal government campaign at Ready.gov which offers valuable and simple tools every American can use to prepare for the inevitable emergency.
